Education and industry are stronger when they work together, and a recent project at our Albuquerque headquarters is a great example of that idea in action. Students from CNM Ingenuity's Bootcamp Metaverse program visited Abba Technologies to scan our offices using Matterport 3D scanning technology, creating the foundation for a digital twin of our building while gaining hands-on experience with the same industry-leading tools our Digital Services team uses every day.
It was a chance to give emerging technologists real-world experience, and a chance for our team to show how the technologies we deploy for utilities, government agencies, and enterprises across the Southwest come together on a real project.
About CNM Ingenuity
Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) is one of the largest community colleges in the state and a cornerstone of workforce development in the Albuquerque metro area. CNM Ingenuity, Inc. is its non-profit enterprise arm, created to move faster than a traditional academic calendar allows and to connect education directly to the needs of local employers.
Ingenuity runs accelerated training programs, bootcamps, and applied technology initiatives designed to get students into high-demand careers quickly. Its guiding equation says it plainly: Education + Industry = Opportunity. By pairing rigorous, hands-on instruction with direct industry involvement, Ingenuity helps build the local talent pipeline that companies like Abba depend on.
The Bootcamp Metaverse Program
The Metaverse program is one of Ingenuity's forward-looking bootcamps, focused on the skills behind immersive and spatial computing: 3D capture, digital modeling, virtual environments, and the workflows that turn physical spaces into interactive digital experiences. These are not abstract academic exercises. Spatial data and 3D reality capture are quickly becoming standard tools in architecture, construction, facilities management, real estate, and infrastructure operations.
For the students, scanning a working corporate headquarters meant applying classroom skills to a live environment, with all the practical challenges that come with it: planning scan coverage, handling reflective surfaces and tight hallways, and producing a clean, usable dataset. That is exactly the kind of experience that translates directly into a career.
What Is Matterport 3D Scanning?
Matterport is a leading reality-capture platform that creates accurate, photorealistic 3D models of physical spaces. Using specialized cameras mounted on tripods, an operator captures a series of scan positions throughout a building. The platform stitches those captures together into a navigable 3D model, complete with measurements, floor plans, and the ability to virtually "walk through" the space from anywhere.
The output is far more than a set of photos. A Matterport scan produces dimensionally accurate spatial data: you can measure a doorway, lay out furniture, document the exact location of equipment, or hand a contractor a precise model without anyone setting foot on site. For distributed organizations and facilities teams, that accessibility is transformative.
From a 3D Scan to a Digital Twin
A Matterport model is the starting point. A digital twin is where it becomes truly powerful.
A digital twin is a living, virtual representation of a physical asset that stays connected to real-world data. Where a 3D scan captures what a space looks like at a moment in time, a digital twin layers in live information and context so the model reflects how the space actually operates:
- Spatial foundation: The Matterport scan provides accurate geometry and a navigable visual model of the building
- Connected data: Sensor readings, IoT devices, building systems, and asset records are tied to specific locations within the model
- Analytics and context: Software adds the ability to monitor conditions, track assets, plan changes, and answer questions about the space over time
The result is a digital representation of the headquarters that can support facilities planning, space management, documentation, and training, and that can grow more capable as additional data sources are connected. The scan the students captured is the first layer of exactly that kind of model.
How Abba Works in This Space
Digital twins, IoT, GIS, and analytics are core to Abba's Digital Services practice. Our work in this area is built on the same progression this project demonstrates: capture the physical world accurately, connect it to operational data, and turn that combination into better decisions.
For our customers, that looks like:
- Reality capture and 3D modeling: Documenting facilities, infrastructure, and sites with accurate spatial data that teams can access remotely
- Digital twins for operations: Connecting models to sensors and systems so utilities, agencies, and facility operators can monitor assets, plan maintenance, and respond to issues with real-time visibility
- IoT and analytics: Bringing live data into the picture and applying analytics to detect problems early and forecast future needs
- GIS integration: Tying spatial and asset data together so organizations can manage everything from a single building to a service territory
The thread running through all of it is our tagline: From IT to Intelligence. Capturing a space is the IT part. Turning that capture into something that helps people make better decisions is the intelligence part, and that is where we focus.
Why Supporting Programs Like This Matters
Abba has been part of the New Mexico community for over three decades, and supporting local talent is part of how we operate. Opening our doors for a project like this benefits everyone involved: students get real experience with professional-grade tools in a real working environment, and the broader tech community gains skilled people ready to work in fields that are only growing in importance.
Building the future together is not just a slogan on a banner. It is what happens when students get to apply their skills on a real project, with real tools, in a real building. We were glad to host these students from CNM Ingenuity, and we are excited to see where their skills take them.
